The Max Planck Foundation (Heidelberg, Germany) and Brunei Darussalam Government agencies held 2 workshops on the Law of the Sea

On the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Germany and Brunei Darussalam, the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law (Heidelberg, Germany) held 2 workshops on the Law of the Sea in co-operation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Attorney General’s Chambers of Brunei Darussalam.
The workshops concentrated on discussing the interpretation, application and evolution of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as well as three global agreements drafted thereunder: The 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of UNCLOS (1994 Implementing Agreement), The 1995 Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of UNCLOS relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks (1995 Fish Stocks Agreement) and The 2023 Agreement under UNCLOS on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement).
The first workshop (29.-31. October, 2024) was attended by participants from all ASEAN Member States, Timor-Leste, and the ASEAN Secretariat.
The second workshop (2. November, 2024) was bilateral, attended by participants from relevant Bruneian agencies.
Both workshops were funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, Berlin.
