Ambassador Weert Börner paid a courtesy call to Dato Haji Mohamad Azmi, Deputy Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office. They discussed the current globally volatile energy situation and the plans of their respective governments to implement the transition from relying less on fossil energy sources, at the same time building up renewable energy sources. Both Brunei and Germany agree on the importance to contribute to a lower carbon footprint in order to limit climate change.
Energy issues are priority issues for both Germany and Brunei, not only because of the current global impact of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, but also because of the ongoing general energy transition around the world. Renewable energies, especially wind and solar energy, have developed to the cheapest and fastest growing energy sources in recent years. Germany, for example, the third-largest economy worldwide, is meanwhile producing 60 % of its high electricity demand from renewables, 31 % from wind, 17 % from solar, 8 % from biomass and 4 % from hydropower.
