Congratulations to MPABD, the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam, on a well-prepared and successful “Brunei Darussalam Maritime Week 2026”!
It took place from 6th to 9th August 2026 at the Dermaga Diraja / Energy Hub.

On 8th August, Ambassador Weert Börner contributed a 20-minute speech to the Maritime Week’s programme on “Germany’s Maritime Commitment for Safe Seas, a Thriving Economy and Future-Ready People”. He highlighted:
- The mutual support of Brunei and Germany for the global and indispensable freedom of navigation, be it the Strait of Hormuz or the South China Sea, based on the rules of UNCLOS, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,
- the excellent cooperation between Brunei and Germany in international organizations dealing with maritime and ocean issues such as IMO (International Maritime Organization) and IALA (International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation),
- the importance of the new “High Seas Convention” or UN BBNJ Agreement, the United Nations Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, meanwhile signed by more than 140 countries including Germany and Brunei, and
- the ongoing success of the 50/50 Brunei-Germany joint venture Muara Maritime Services (MMS) in renovating and modernizing old navy ships, having created 300 new qualified jobs in Brunei and offering vocational training to many young Bruneians.

Ambassador Börner also referred to the growing number of cruise ships visiting Brunei and recommended to the leadership of MPABD and other maritime experts to visit the world’s first environment-friendly cruise ship pier in Hamburg, Germany. It has been operating since 2019, providing even the biggest cruise ship with green electricity (zero CO2 emissions) and clean water management from land, thus reducing considerably the environmental pollution caused by cruise ships.
